Through Loss. Through Transition. Toward Hope.

Life can change in an instant. The loss or serious illness of a loved one, the challenges of starting over in a new country, or the uncertainty of navigating school and young adulthood can leave individuals and families feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn.

The Akin Initiative is here to help.

We support immigrant families and young people in New York through compassionate family support, mentorship, empowerment, community connections, and access to practical resources.

Because no one should have to navigate life’s hardest transitions alone.

To strengthen immigrant individuals and families through compassionate support, mentorship, empowerment, community connection, and access to resources.

Four Program Pillars

Support | Mentor | Connect | Empower

  • SUPPORT
Families experiencing bereavement and serious or terminal illness.
  • MENTOR
High school and college students through mentorship, peer connection, educational guidance, and career development.
  • CONNECT
New immigrants and families to trustworthy community resources and services.
  • EMPOWER
Individuals and families through education, skills development, leadership, and pathways to greater self-sufficiency.

What We Believe

We envision thriving immigrant communities where no family faces grief, crisis, or transition alone and where every young person has the support, guidance, resources, and opportunities needed to realize their full potential.

We believe strong communities are built when people show up for one another. When someone grieving finds a listening ear.

When a teenager finds a mentor who believes in their potential. When a college student finds guidance at a critical moment.

When a newly arrived family finds someone who can point them toward the right resources. When someone who once received support becomes the person who supports someone else.
